For over two decades, I’ve had the privilege of guiding thousands of aspiring project managers through our PMP® Prep Bootcamps. These seasoned and dedicated professionals have been deeply committed to advancing in our field, yet many find the exam to be a formidable hurdle. Interestingly, the more experienced the project manager, the tougher the challenge seems to be. Below, I’ve shared some key mindsets and test-taking strategies that I regularly impart to help them succeed:
- The PMP® Exam evaluates your “academic” grasp of project management, not your personal insights and experiences. Approach it with a textbook mindset.
- Tackle each question mentally before glancing at the multiple-choice options. The wrong answers are designed to mislead you, so be assertive! Seek out the correct answer; don’t wait for it to come to you.
- Prioritize effectively! For situational questions, the right choice often involves: 1) determining your next step, 2) identifying the root cause of an issue, or 3) addressing the most critical problem.
- Opt for the answer that demonstrates the most proactive approach. Navigate the risks.
- Stop memorizing! The exam has changed so brain dumps and memorizing is a waste of precious study time.
